Re: PASS THIS ALONG - Results of LifeTree questionnaire and announcement of website

We have been gathering information about the candidates running in North Carolina's September 10 primary and November 5 general elections. As part of that process, LifeTree sent a questionnaire to all North Carolina candidates running for federal or state legislative offices on August 9 and 10. Those results are presented in the memorandum below.

We also gathered information on some key votes, cosponsorships of important legislation regarding the life issue, and other items of public record. We have tried to be as thorough and accurate as possible in the time allowed. We make these results, as well as a repeat of the questionnaire results, available on the web at www.burtonsys.com/ltree.html.

Please pass this information along to interested parties. Then, consider spending a few minutes in prayer for the candidates and voters during this primary election week. God bless you all.

Memorandum About the LifeTree questionnaire

LifeTree sent a questionnaire to all of North Carolina's U.S. Senate, House, and State legislative candidates -- over 500, in all. Their responses are compiled in this memo so you can have up-to-date information as the September 10th primaries draw near.

Please use these results to do your own evaluating to determine the viability of their campaigns. LifeTree's questionnaire can help you determine how these candidates stand on the right to life. The rest is up to you.

In the candidate list which follows, candidates who did not respond are not mentioned, except for incumbents in races where another candidate did respond. We also listed those who did not respond from the new, open, 13th US House of Rep. District.

The first item on each line is the district number. It is followed by the candidate's name, Party and hometown: (D) means Democrat, (R) means Republican, (L) means Libertarian, (D-I) means incumbent Democrat, (R-I) means incumbent Republican. We listed all districts from which we received a candidate response.

Answer summaries indicate candidates' agreement or difference with a pro-life position. "Pro-life answers to all questions" beside a candidate's name indicates agreement with all the pro-life positions and beliefs; specific points of disagreement are indicated according to the following numbers in the key (a question mark indicates an ambiguous or missing answer):

KEY

2. Does not accept the scientific fact that a human being comes into existence at fertilization (conception).

3. Does not believe that all innocent human beings, from fertilization (conception) until natural death, at every stage of development, deserve legal protection.

4. Thinks that a mother should have the legal right to an abortion if her baby:
  a. Was conceived through rape or incest.
  b. Has a handicap.
  c. Has a genetic defect.

5. Disagrees with the following principles:
  a. That the unborn child has a fundamental, individual right to life that cannot be infringed.
  b. Endorsement of a "human life amendment" to the (State or U.S.) Constitution.  (State legislative candidates were asked about the State Constitution.)
  c. Opposition to the use of public revenues for abortion or for organizations that advocate it.
  d. Opposition to assisted suicide.
  e. Opposition to euthanasia.
  f. Legislation to extend the protections of the 14th Amendment to unborn children.  (This question was only asked of U.S. Senate and Congressional candidates.)
  g. Appointment of judges who respect the sactity of human life.  (This question was only asked of U.S. Senate candidates.)

6. Will not pledge to vote for laws and work for public policies that are founded on pro-life principles.

7. Will not pledge to sponsor or co-sponsor the following pro-life legislation:
  a. Prohibit scientific research that involves the killing of human embryos.
  b. Prohibit the creation of human beings through cloning.
  c. Repeal all laws and policies that provide for taxpayer funding of abortion for any reason.
(Clarification: some candidates wrote-in "except to save the life of the mother" or similar; we reported this as agreement with a pro-life position)

  d. Prohibit federal funding of programs involving "contraceptive" drugs that may cause a chemical abortion.
  e. Prohibit the use of taxpayer funds for distribution to foreign countries of abortion-causing drugs such as RU-486 and the "morning after pill."
  f. Prohibit the sale or distribution of the "morning after pill" without a prescription.
  g. Oppose a government mandate forcing insurance companies to cover contraceptive drugs and devices.
  h. Prohibit the use of genetic testing information as a condition for insurance coverage and/or employment.
  i. Prohibit the denial of health insurance coverage to newborn babies based upon pre-natal genetic testing information.
  j. Prohibit the use of fetal tissue derived from the victims of induced abortions in medical research.
  k. Extend the 14th Amendment's constitutional protection to human beings at every stage of development from conception/fertilization.  (This question was asked only of U.S. Senate and Congressional candidates.)

8. Does not condemn the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, or will not pledge to work to overturn it.  (This question was asked only of U.S. Senate and Congressional candidates.)
